Jean Brise's painting is fertile. Haunting. A painting is a kind of molecular proliferation of shapes which are derived not from division, fragmentation or a loss of substance, but rather seem to be born, to be given life by a vital force to exist. A multiplicity which hints at, without attaining and thereby becoming fixed and rigid, a composition of balanced groupings (of flowers or butterflies), or which unifies signs and lines in the form of studied calligraphy or perfect architecture. Germinating shapes, not terminating, perhaps abstract but it is important to note that they do not depart from reality to escape from it but in fact to suggest a world at one with itself.
